Texturized yarns are made by a process of air texturizing filament yarns sometimes referred to as taslanizingwhich combines multiple filament yarns into a yarn with some of the characteristics of spun yarns. It can be two types. I know the difference between woolen spun and worsted.

Single, ply, and cord yarns. This number is equal to the yarn count of the thread based upon a three ply cotton count yarn since originally all threads were made 3 ply. Also some suggestions on possible modern yarns. Spun yarns may contain a single type of fibre, or be a blend of various types. Uncovered fibres may be used alone to produce fabrics, but they impart a rubbery feel. Bulk may be introduced chemically by combining filaments of both high and low shrinkage potential in the same yarn, then subjecting the yarn to washing or steaming, causing the high shrinkage filaments to react, producing a bulked yarn without stretch.

Metallic yarns may also be made by twisting a strip of metal around a natural or man-made core yarn, producing a metal surface. Some companies also primarily measure in ounces with common sizes being three- ouncefour-ounce, six-ounce, and eight-ounce skeins. The term often causes confusion because of the spinning term worsted in contrast to woolen. Do you have a better solution?

For yarns from the s through s, VintageKnits maintains a very useful guide to fiber content and actual gauges of specific yarn brand names.

Ticket Number is based on greige or unfinished thread rather than finished thread. Using that measurement roughly estimate how many stitches per inch the piece had just above the ribbing. This latter notation has not been included previously in Practice D Ex: for a thread size of 50, the TN is really Aug 06, Laura rated it it was ok I was seduced by the title's promise to be the ultimate guide.

When both the single strands and the final ply yarns are twisted in the same direction, the fibre is firmer, producing harder texture and reducing flexibility. The organization kinds of fiber, how they're spun and dyed, and why yarn is or isn't plied is good. The first method uses physical resists marbles or corks that prevent specific areas of knitting from felting; where there are no resists, the garment does felt, creating unique fabric with bobbles and dimensionality.

Labels on yarn for handicrafts often include information on gaugeknown in the UK as tension, which is a measurement of how many stitches and rows are produced per inch or per cm on a specified size of knitting needle or crochet hook.

See Example 5. Fibres used for sewing threads are Cotton is a major fibre used because of its low cost and high versatility Nylon and Polyester Rayon is used primarily for embroidery or fancy stitch work rather than for seaming Types of threads Sewing threads may be of spun, filament or core spun type.

Most yarns have a single uniform hue, but there is also a wide selection of variegated yarns: Heathered or tweed: yarn with flecks of different coloured fibre Ombre: variegated yarn with light and dark shades of a single hue Multicolored: variegated yarn with two or more distinct hues a "parrot colourway" might have green, yellow and red Self-striping: yarn dyed with lengths of colour that will automatically create stripes in a knitted or crocheted object Marled: yarn made from strands of different-coloured yarn twisted together, sometimes in closely related hues A comparison of yarn weights thicknesses : the top skein is aran weight, suitable for knitting a thick sweater or hat.

I know there are lots of people now interested in older knitting patterns — everything from ponchos published in the s through the truly vintage stuff going back to the late s. Yarn drying after being dyed in the early American tradition, at Conner Prairie living history museum.

The most widely used blends are cotton - polyester and wool - acrylic fibre blends. Novelty yarns Novelty yarns include a wide variety of yarns made with such special effects as slubs, produced by intentionally including small lumps in the yarn structure, and man-made yarns with varying thickness introduced during production.

The distinction is comparable to the use of the units, litres or gallonsto express a property such as the volume of an object.

The Knitter's Book of Yarn: The Ultimate Guide to Choosing, Using, and Enjoying Yarn

This naming convention is more descriptive than precise; fibre artists disagree about where on the continuum each lies, and the precise relationships between the sizes.

Cord yarns Cord yarns are produced by twisting ply yarns together, with the final twist usually applied in the opposite direction of the ply twist.

Types of yarn

Ticket number in filament threads is based on denier Designation except that the last digit is deleted. The application of the practice to specific cases is illustrated with examples.

In the end, though, I'm keeping this book more as a reference volume than a pattern collection. This last term covers the concept of size or fineness. Metallic yarns may also be made by twisting a strip of metal around a natural or man-made core yarn, producing a metal surface.

Editorial Reviews "An inspired and thoughtfully assembled collection of projects that redefine our entire notion of 'felt,' combining the fluid and firm, sculptural and wearable. Spandex is the generic term for a highly elastic synthetic fibre composed mainly of segmented polyurethane.

Even after reading descriptions of different yarn, I didn't see how this would help me when in the yarn shop. For additional information about the production, characteristics, and uses of modern man-made novelty yarns, see man-made fibres.

Sewing threads are special kinds of yarns that are engineered and designed to pass through a sewing machine rapidly, to form a stitch efficiently, and to function while in a sewn product without breaking or becoming distorted for at least the useful life of the product.the same diameter, the same surface treatment method and the same use cycle) should be selected to reduce evenness CV value [10].

2. Experiments and Analysis Source Material Source material of tencel yarn and cotton yarn is shown in Table 1. Table 1. yarns or tow. When the fibers to be tested contain crimp, or if the tow or yarns have been subjected to bulking, crimping, or texturing process, the tensile properties are determined after removal of the crimp.
